I'm finding xooglers an interesting read. It strikes me that they had many of the same types of problems AV did. So perhaps it is not as some have suggested that Google employees (especially engineers) were smarter than AV employees, but that Google was able to deal with problems more quickly than AV was. One major difference between the two companies is that Google invested much more in their technology than AV did. AV spent ridiculous amounts of money on "properties" such as shopping.com, for example.

Yep. I've always felt that our technology was in fact not noticably worse; there were other reasons for the rapid speed with which Google caught up during a certain six month period. Frequency of index updating comes to mind.

Thanks for turning me on to xooglers. As someone who escaped a poisonously political eBay and joined Google with a lot of hope, enthusiasm and some trepidation, I really like hearing it unfiltered from the trenches-- good and bad.
