Oct. 9th, 2005

Last week was busy and stressful. I'm still feeling uneasy about some things at work. I've thought more about possibly taking some time off from piano lessons to give me more time to work, but I would rather not do so.

Currently I work in an open area occupied mostly by the XP developers, another guy who does testing, and occasionally some folks from the documentation team. Sometimes, it's hard for me to concentrate because there are several other conversations going on, and there is a good deal of ambient noise. I don't have a cube yet; hopefully I'll get one soon. I think that having some private space will help me concentrate. While I was working from home this weekend, I noticed that I didn't feel quite as distracted as while I'm at work, and my energy level didn't fall.

Would wearing headphones help? Not necessarily with music -- maybe the noise-cancelling ones?

I'm currently wearing music headphones now (and listening to music). I don't own any noise-canceling headphones. Perhaps I'll try some, but I think the main problem is that there are multiple conversations going on while I'm trying to think. Because the UI developers are an XP group, this is to be expected, but it's not the environment I work best in. I actually used to work from home a lot during my last two years at AV. My cube was in an area consisting mostly of marketing people who would often discuss things out loud. That made it difficult for me to concentrate, so I preferred to stay home.

I don't think noise canceling headphones will help. They do not drown out conversations. They are not supposed to. I think they might reduce the ambient noise, but that does not sound like the most serious problem. I think the solutions to that are headphones with music loud enough to drown out the conversations, a quite cube, or working from home. How are things going aside from that?

Hope this works out well for you.

Listening to music helps drown out the conversations. I still hope to get a cube.

I'll write more about work later. Thanks for asking.
