There are some good tips in there even for those who haven't experienced the disruption of sudden unemployment.

There are some good tips, but some of this strikes me as absurd for anyone who wasn't living crazily to start with.

"Food had been a big part of Goerz's budget, so instead of spending $10 on lunch every day and going out to dinner four nights a week..."

...$10 on lunch every day? Going out four nights a week? Yeah, it's not hard to be more thrifty about your food when you're spending that kind of money. Good grief. I'm not convinced that cutting back to two meals a day is a good solution to that, either. Living with roommates? I guess that's different when you're 37, but...probably 95% of my friends who aren't still in dorms live either with platonic roommates or with a significant other (or both), and quite a few of them are in their 30s. Some of these things just seem like common sense.
